Dan and I have enjoyed the transition to living in Alabama and found
the
activities in our new town more interesting than expected. The best part
of
the move was discovering that Paul and Laura are just 2 hours away in
Birmingham. Hopefully, we will get to see more of them this year, watching
Lilly Wainiu grow is very exciting. I formally opened our historic
limestone house in downtown Florence as a bed and breakfast, and business
is
slowly growning. It is fun sharing this piece of history and our
collection of artworks with our visitors.
Our son Erik remains in San Francisco and occasionally gets together
with
Fiji RPCVs living in the Bay area for grog sessions. Daughter Sarah is
still
enjoying the paradise of Kauai and her sister Amy stayed for a third year
teaching in Honduras. Carrie is well into her second year with the Peace
Corps in The Gambia and will be COSing in July. Her occasional but long
Emails home are great fun. It has been a busy year of travel for all of
us. We visited Amy and had a chance to tour the beautiful country of
Honduras, and Dan had an opportunity after an assignment in nearby countries
of West Africa to link up with Carrie on the beaches of Gambia's capital,
Banjul. Erik and his girlfriend, Mindy, visited with Carrie in July and
traveled "Peace Corps style" through five West African countries
for a
month. They were also able to spend time in her isolated village and meet
her new family far upriver. It was an unforgettable adventure. Amy and
Sarah continue to travel at every opportunity and have toured many places
-
from South America to Australia. Dan continued going to and working in
interesting places for IFDC, such as Kosovo, India, and four countries
in
West Africa. Three of the kids are busy filling out grad school
applications and studying for GREs so there will most likely be moves
and
new addresses in 2004!
I hear the new/revised PC program in Fiji is up and running and doing
very
well. I stay in touch with the Peace Corps office in Atlanta and have
been
doing a little recruiting at the nearby University of North Alabama campus.
This along with a few other volunteer jobs keeps me busy and happy. For
anyone visiting Alabama, there is always a place to stay in Florence,
be
sure and give us a call and/or checkout our website
www.thelimestonehouse.com.
Peace, Carolyn
