The landscape on the western side of Vitilevu is remarkably different than the eastern side. The west is known as "the dry side" and the east as "the wet side". Sugarcane (Fiji's largest commercial crop) is grown on the western side because the hot, sunny and relatively dry climate. Rain falls almost daily on the eastern side of the main island where the rainforests are still located.
